A strong Dynamics 365 Functional Consultant needs much more than knowledge of individual modules. The role sits between business requirements, application capabilities, configuration, users, and technical teams.
Key skills include:
Business process knowledge – Understand processes such as sales, customer service, lead-to-opportunity, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, finance, supply chain, or field service depending on the implementation.
Dynamics 365 configuration – Be comfortable configuring tables, forms, views, business rules, processes, security roles, dashboards, and application settings without unnecessary custom development.
Dataverse knowledge – Understand tables, relationships, columns, business units, environments, security, auditing, and data management.
Power Platform expertise – Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI, and Copilot capabilities are increasingly important because modern Dynamics implementations rely heavily on the broader Power Platform.
Requirements analysis – Convert business problems into functional requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and solution designs.
Integration understanding – You don't necessarily need to be an integration developer, but you should understand APIs, Dataverse APIs, Azure services, integration patterns, and data synchronization.
Security and governance – Understand role-based security, business units, teams, field-level security, environments, and appropriate access models.
Data migration – Know how to approach data cleansing, mapping, transformation, validation, and migration.
Testing and troubleshooting – Be capable of creating test scenarios, identifying configuration issues, reproducing defects, and working with developers to resolve them.
Stakeholder communication – Explain technical possibilities and limitations in business language.
The most valuable consultants also develop solution-thinking skills. Instead of asking, “How do I configure this feature?”, they ask, “What is the simplest, maintainable Dynamics 365 solution that solves the business problem?”
